Counseling/Mental Health

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a pediatric therapy model designed to establish an interpersonal connection through the power of play to help clients overcome emotional or social difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development. This approach, designed for children from 3-12 years old, is based on the idea that play is the natural “language” of children one of the best ways to help children communicate. Therapists and mental health counselors use a child’s natural interests to better understand each child, help them express themselves, and find solutions.

Our Counselors

Licensed mental health professionals (LPCs, LMFTs, MSWs, etc.) are trained mental health professionals who work with both children and adults, along with their families, to improve mental health and well-being. At Child’sPlay, our counselors use play as the primary treatment modality in order to establish rapport and engage the child. Play is the child’s language and toys are the words they use! Clients will explore thoughts and feelings using a variety of activities including sand tray, art, therapeutic games, storytelling, songwriting, and child-directed play. Our counselors work as part of an interdisciplinary team in conjunction with OT, Speech, and Physical Therapy to coordinate all services your child receives. Under the supportive, nonjudgmental guidance of the counselor, children will have fun and gain a healthy sense of self-expression and coping skills through our counseling/mental health services.

Your child may benefit from counseling/mental health services if they experience any of the following things

  • Easily overwhelmed with emotions
  • Anxious tendencies (nervous tics, frequent and unexplained stomach or headaches, avoiding certain situations or stimuli)
  • Lack of confidence in self
  • Becomes angry at small things or overly aggressive
  • Major mood swings
  • Any major behavior changes that seem to come out of the blue
  • They are “clingy” or require a lot of discipline
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Destructive behavior
  • Developmental regression
  • Uncontrollable crying or meltdowns
  • Trauma in their past
