Counseling/Mental Health

Our Counselors

Licensed mental health professionals (LPCs, LMFTs, MSWs, etc.) are trained mental health professionals who work with both children and adults, along with their families, to improve mental health and well-being. At Child’sPlay, our counselors use play as the primary treatment modality in order to establish rapport and engage the child. Play is the child’s language and toys are the words they use! Clients will explore thoughts and feelings using a variety of activities including sand tray, art, therapeutic games, storytelling, songwriting, and child-directed play. Our counselors work as part of an interdisciplinary team in conjunction with OT, Speech, and Physical Therapy to coordinate all services your child receives. Under the supportive, nonjudgmental guidance of the counselor, children will have fun and gain a healthy sense of self-expression and coping skills through our counseling/mental health services.

What is Play Therapy?

“APT defines play therapy as ‘the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.’ More simply put, child play therapy is a way of being with the child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping in the “language” of the child – play.  Licensed mental health professionals therapeutically use play to help their clients, most often children ages three to 12 years, to better express themselves and resolve their problems.” – Association for Play Therapy
